Campus Safety Day was recently held on North, Central , South and Miramar West Campuses, and local law enforcement, medical and military personnel gathered in the breezeway to pass out fliers and discuss campus safety and the resources available to all students at Broward College.

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month, and Broward College participates in Campus Safety Day every year to inform students and faculty about the resources available to them at the college and in their communities. Personnel from the college and from the surrounding communities set up tables and give away fliers to raise awareness of the resources that students can use.

Students that were curious about their health insurance coverage could stop by Broward Health Medical Center’s booth. Through the M.O.P.E.D. (Medical Options For Patient Eligibility Department) program, BHMC offers financial assistance, Medicaid, childcare services, and other services to students

and citizens in need. Students wishing to take advantage of this service can visit BrowardHealth.org/MOPED or call 954-355-5442 to see if they are eligible for assistance.

Also in attendance were paramedics from Broward College Emergency Medical Services. BC EMS had a tent where students and faculty could learn CPR and other life-saving measures.

Students looking to do their civic duty could stop by one of the two voting tables that were available. Students could fill out a short, simple form that immediately registers them to vote in all local and national elections, and many students (including myself) took advantage of it.

The most interesting table, however, was the Student Assistance Program table. Through SAP, students at Broward College are eligible for up to six counselling sessions free of charge. Students dealing with chronic stress, depression, self-esteem, or other issues can be set up with a mental health professional to help them through any issues going on in their life currently. To schedule an appointment, students can call 954-424-6916.

Campus Safety Day was capped off by a K9 demonstration put on by Coconut Creek Police on the lawn adjacent to the breezeway.

Campus Safety Day 2018 continued a long tradition of Broward College doing its best to connect its students with the surrounding communities.
