Broward College has a dazzling community of clubs that are warm and welcoming to everyone. There are clubs for LEGO lovers, for people passionate about blood donation, for aspiring engineers, for those seeking mental health support, and many more. Together, they create a vibrant mosaic of student life. None of this, however, would flourish without the help of Miss Katie Chueire Rivera, the Central Campus SGA club communicator.
Katie is a thoughtful and attentive young woman, enthusiastic about helping clubs reach their full potential. The Observer had the pleasure of interviewing her about her role in the Student Government Association (SGA) office. Her day-to-day responsibilities include a swirl of meetings, planning with other SGA officers, and supporting Broward College clubs with any challenges they face.
When asked how she manages to juggle her responsibilities while also being a full-time student, Katie explained that she relies on her planner and on her love for being part of the SGA community. She described the SGA office as a place filled with trust and camaraderie, where the line between work and fun often disappears.
One of the reasons Katie is so beloved by the Broward College community is her dedication to not only advising clubs, but also truly getting to know them. Even though her job doesn’t require her to, she makes a point of attending club meetings as often as possible. Katie believes the magic of a club lies in the activities and relationships, not just the planning.
“You know, of course you can get to know a club on a surface level, but it’s the people of the club that really make it shine,” Chueire Rivera said. “And also, I feel like, you know, my position really allows me to talk with them and get to know them. And just be part of that.”
When asked about SGA’s event planning process, Katie shared that the team begins by brainstorming topics, weighing the balance of serious versus fun events, and considering how to give students the best experience possible. Once ideas are gathered, Central Campus Student Life Director and SGA advisor, Miss Jasmine Mosley, reviews and approve them, and then the marketing team begins publicizing.
The SGA office works tirelessly to offer engaging activities that help students connect with one another. Katie noted that the team is always open to feedback and collaborates closely to strengthen communication, encourage creativity, and ensure they are providing the right support for the student body.
Through this role, Katie has already gained many valuable skills. Regular planning meetings have strengthened her public speaking abilities, and she now feels confident when faced with new situations or meeting new people.
Outside of her SGA work, Katie is a criminal justice major. Her passion for the field was sparked by her love for horror novels and true crime shows. Though she enjoys her classes, she tries not to immerse herself too deeply in crime or horror content, as she prioritizes protecting her mental health.
It’s clear that Broward College benefits every day from Katie’s energy, kindness, and dedication. Her commitment to showing up as the best version of herself inspires the students and clubs she supports. Broward College is incredibly fortunate to have her as a part of its community because the mosaic of BC Clubs wouldn’t quite fit into the beautiful creation they hold without her help.
